My name is Sofiean, I am 25 years old, and I come from Luxembourg. After finishing university, I suddenly had a lot of time on my hands. Like many young people, I suddenly had time to think about what I wanted to do next. I had heard about volunteering from friends who had already gone through the experience, but for a long time, I lacked the confidence to apply.
I took part in a short-term volunteering project at Villa Elba in Finland. It was my first experience of volunteering abroad, and it immediately left a strong impression on me. During those few weeks, I met inspiring people, experienced a welcoming community, and got a glimpse of what life as a volunteer could be like.
When the project ended, I realized I was not ready to leave the experience behind. Instead, it made me want more. That short-term project gave me the confidence to apply for a long-term volunteering position at Villa Elba, and a few months later, I returned for a ten-month project. Looking back now, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Coming back to Finland felt both familiar and exciting. Even though I already knew Villa Elba, living there for ten months was a completely different experience. I was excited, but also nervous about spending such a long period away from what I am used to.
What I discovered over those months was so much more than a new country or a new culture. I discovered a different way of living, working, and connecting with people.
One of the most meaningful parts of this experience was the people I met, mainly my coworkers. I made friends and connections from different backgrounds and cultures, and many of those friendships and memories will stay with me long after my volunteering project has ended.
Being surrounded by open-minded and supportive people helped me grow in ways I never imagined. I learned how much people can teach each other when they come together with curiosity and respect.
I also had the chance to learn about the Finnish education system and working culture, which gave me a completely new perspective on life. But the biggest lessons were the ones I learned about myself.
Stepping outside my comfort zone and facing new situations every day taught me to be more independent, adaptable, and confident. I realized that I was capable of much more than I had thought.
There were moments that challenged me, moments when I missed home, and moments when I felt uncertain. Yet those moments became some of the most valuable parts of the journey because they helped me grow.
They taught me resilience and showed me that personal growth often happens when we dare to embrace the unknown.
What surprised me most was that volunteering was not only about discovering a new country or gaining professional experience. It was also about discovering myself.
Through the people I met, the experiences I lived, and the challenges I faced, I gained a deeper understanding of who I am and what I want from life.
This volunteering experience changed me. It broadened my horizons, strengthened my self-confidence, and gave me memories and friendships that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Most importantly, it changed the way I see the world and my place in it.
To anyone who is thinking about volunteering abroad but feels hesitant or afraid, I would say this: trust yourself and take the chance.
My short-term project at Villa Elba was the first step that led me to an even bigger adventure, and I am incredibly grateful that I took it. It might feel scary at first, but the experiences, friendships, and personal growth you gain are worth far more than you can imagine. Sometimes the opportunities that seem the most uncertain become the ones that shape your life the most.
