The sea, forests and surrounding nature are an essential part of Villa Elba. That is why we want to take care of them for future generations as well.
For us, sustainability means not only caring for the environment, but also treating people equally, ensuring safety, working together with the local community and operating in an economically sustainable way. We continuously develop our activities and aim to make sustainable choices a natural part of every visit to Villa Elba.
Villa Elba’s slogan, “Genuine moments, sustainable growth”, also captures the essence of our sustainability work
Our values include respect for life and the environment, solidarity and equality, cultural diversity and internationality, and continuous development as a community. For us, sustainability therefore means more than environmental action. It also means creating a safe and inclusive environment where everyone is treated with respect.
As a national youth centre, we want to lead by example and encourage children, young people, our guests and partners to make responsible choices. We continuously develop our activities and aim to communicate openly and concretely about our sustainability work.
Sustainability at Villa Elba is also reflected in the quality of our youth work. Villa Elba has been awarded the Council of Europe Quality Label for Youth Centres, recognising high-quality and impactful youth work. The Quality Label highlights areas such as human rights, youth participation, safety, the environment, a participant-centred approach and transparency.
Internationality is an important part of our work. Through Erasmus+ activities, youth exchanges and international volunteering, we offer young people opportunities to learn in multicultural environments, meet people from different backgrounds and strengthen their skills. At the same time, we promote active citizenship, solidarity and intercultural understanding.
By choosing Villa Elba, you are also supporting youth work in Finland. Revenue generated through our business activities is directed towards the development of youth work.
Villa Elba has been part of the Green Key programme since 2017. The Green Key certification provides a strong foundation for our long-term environmental work and guides us in continuously developing our operations.
We monitor our energy and water consumption, the amount and sorting of waste, and food waste. We also measure our carbon footprint and use the data to support the development of our activities.
Villa Elba joined the national Energy Efficiency Agreement in 2024.
For us, sustainability is not a one-off project. It is continuous work and small choices made every day.
The sea and coastal environment are an important part of what makes Villa Elba unique. At the same time, they remind us of what we want to protect.
Nature and environmental education have long been at the heart of Villa Elba’s activities. Nature plays an important role in our nature school, school camps, activity programmes, outdoor education and adventure education. Our aim is to strengthen the connection that children, young people and other visitors have with nature and to encourage everyone to treat the environment with respect
Sustainability is also reflected in our kitchen. Whenever possible, we favour locally produced, organic and responsibly sourced ingredients.
We are also part of the Steps to Organic programme (Portaat Luomuun), which helps us monitor our use of organic products and work towards increasing their share. For example, our celebration menus feature meat from the local Björkens farm, potatoes grown in the Ostrobothnia region and organic ingredients.
Reducing food waste is an important part of our sustainability work. Surplus food is also offered through the ResQ service.
Responsible tourism also supports the surrounding community. We work with local businesses, service providers and other partners, and whenever possible, we take local sourcing and sustainability into account in our purchasing decisions.
Our sustainability work also includes cooperation with Visit Kokkola and the City of Kokkola to promote sustainable tourism and develop the natural environment in the surrounding area
For us, sustainability also means ensuring that as many people as possible can participate and feel welcome. Villa Elba is a discrimination-free zone. Equality, accessibility and safety are fundamental principles of our activities.
We have also taken concrete steps to improve accessibility. Our main building and Elban Helmi are accessible, accessibility has been taken into account in one of our accommodation cottages, and the area includes an accessible nature trail, birdwatching platform and campfire site.
We are also part of the Finnish Association of People with Physical Disabilities’ “Equal Service for All” programme. Our participation reflects our commitment to continuously improving the accessibility and inclusiveness of our services and environment.
Nature, experiences and togetherness belong to everyone.
Green Key certification has guided the long-term development of our environmental work since 2017.
We monitor energy and water consumption, food waste, waste volumes and recycling, and calculate our carbon footprint. We use the results to develop our operations and set new goals.
We have developed a waste reduction and reuse plan and continuously work to improve waste sorting and reduce the amount of waste we produce.
We measure our carbon footprint and use the results to identify our main sources of emissions and guide our efforts to reduce them.
We work with local partners and take sustainability, local sourcing and recognised certifications into account in our purchasing decisions whenever possible
We continuously develop the accessibility and inclusiveness of our facilities, services and communications so that as many people as possible can take part in Villa Elba’s activities.
Our work is not finished yet. We want to do even more in the years ahead. We will continue improving our energy efficiency, reducing food waste and emissions, increasing responsible and local sourcing, and improving the accessibility of our services.
At the same time, we are developing better ways to measure and communicate the impact of our work.
For us, sustainability is an ongoing journey, and every improvement is a step in the right direction
Huom: muutin tässä alkuperäisen otsikon “Vihreiden sertifikaattien vahvistaminen”, koska Sustainable Travel Finland ei ole teillä vielä saavutettu merkki ja Portaat Luomuun on ohjelma. Siksi “Continuous development through environmental programmes” on turvallisempi.
